| Review: The Help |
| One of the feel-good movies of the year, The Help is set amidst the US civil rights movement’s great achievements for racial equality in the 1960s, and fixes on Eugenia ‘Skeeter’ Phelan (Emma Stone, Easy A). An aspiring young writer, Skeeter decides to interview African American maids (or ‘the help’) for a book she’s planning on the hardships these women face, and the observations they’ve made of the white families they’ve worked for. Stone, shaping up to be one of today’s most versatile young actors, gives a remarkable performance as the young woman whose latest writing exercise changes her life – and belief system - forever. |
