| The always-dependable Kate Winslet stars in The Reader, a gripping period drama concerning the relationship between a 15-year-old German boy and a mysterious woman twice his age, and the way that it grows doubly complex when the man reencounters the woman years later and discovers a shocking truth about her past. |
Years after their affair, Michael (David Kross) discovers that his old lover (Winslet) is on trial for murdering Jews during the Holocaust, and that he has evidence that will alleviate her sentence. The distraught young man has to reconcile the woman he knew with the unfeeling and narrowly submissive woman that now sits in court.
Based on author Bernhard Schlink’s best-selling novel of the same name, The Reader features sublime turns by Oscar winner Winslet, Ralph Fiennes (as older Michael) and newcomer David Kross (as young Michael).
Though director Stephen Daldry has done a wonderful job, it’s David Hare’s superb screenplay that really makes The Reader an emotionally-charged experience. See for yourself.
