Greatness comes to those who take it.
Based on the writings of Russian historian Lev Gumilev, Mongol is an intriguing and powerful look at the younger years of Mongol subjugator Genghis Khan. Kicking off with Khan’s birth in 1162, Mongol follows the legendary figure from his perilous childhood to the tragic battle that sealed his destiny. The film, unlike a lot of others based on the man, doesn’t reveal Khan to be a swine or as evil as the hoary stereotype he’s often been labelled, but as a fearless and inspiring leader who loved his country and his people. He was actually quite an extraordinary man – and one that was dearly loved by his wife, Borte, his lifelong partner and most trusted advisor. Filmed in the very same places that Khan grew up, Mongol is a beautifully made and beautifully told story that has a little bit of everything – action, drama, romance, thrills and even horror.
