There is no escape.
This film from Gillian Armstrong, director of such classics as My Brilliant Career and Starstruck, fixes on the relationship between America’s king of magic Harry Houdini (the always terrific Guy Pearce) and Scottish woman Mary McGarvie (Catherine Zeta-Jones). The magician challenges wannabe psychic McGarvie to prove her legitimacy in front of an audience; if she can tell Houdini what the last three words his late mother said to him on her deathbed were, she’ll be $10,000 richer. Things become more complicated, however, as it’s not too long before the pair fall in love. The production design in Death Defying Acts is grand, as are the performances. Young Saoirse Ronan, exhibiting the same self-confidence she displayed in Atonement, plays Zeta-Jones’ daughter with glee, whilst Timothy Spall is great as Houdini’s right-hand man, Mr Sugarman. Armstrong’s direction is also exquisite – don’t miss this magical movie!
