There
have been some terrific ghost buddy movies over the years, from the
Peter Sellers-starring Being There to Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, Jerry
Zucker’s smash Ghost and, more recently, M Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth
Sense. Now, writer/director David Koepp, best known as the in-demand
scribe of blockbuster films like Spider-Man and War of the Worlds,
takes a stab at the beloved genre. The result? A high-spirited comedy
that proves love has no boundaries!

Comic superstar Ricky Gervais (TV’s Extras and The Office), a master of
deadpan humour, plays a more subdued version of his usual onscreen self
here, a dissatisfied dentist named Bertram Pincus. He croaks it
unexpectedly, but is revived after seven minutes, only to discover
that, well, he can see dead people!
Frank Herlihy (Greg Kinnear, Baby Mama) – amongst many others –
discovers the dentist’s secret, and wants his help communicating with
the living. In Frank’s case he needs Bertram to break up the impending
marriage of his beloved widow Gwen (Téa Leoni, The Family Man) to the
incredibly smug Richard (Billy Campbell, TV’s Once and Again).
There’s lots of fun to be had here, and perhaps the odd tear, too – and that’s the tooth! |
