A cross between The Departed, We Own the Night and TV’s Underbelly, Pride and Glory is a gripping police thriller that pits a family of coppers against one another.
The film fixes on a multi-generational Irish-American police family whose moral code is tested when one of two sons on the force (Edward Norton, The Incredible Hulk) investigates an inflammable case involving his older brother (Noah Emmerich, Little Children) and brother-in-law (Colin Farrell, In Bruges). Whilst the quieter, good guy cop brother makes waves by fingering the dodgy cops, his brother and brother-in-law have to decide where his loyalties lie.
The performances here are very solid. Jon Voight as the family patriarch, and a veteran law-enforcer who’s very pro-cop, is especially strong. Even at 70, Voight (Midnight Cowboy, Heat, Rosewood) remains one of the most interesting performers on the silver screen.
Writer and director Gavin O’Connor is actually the son of a real-life cop, and he brings what he’s heard about the job to his film. This is a very sturdy and rather realistic interpretation of police life.
