Colin Firth can hardly remember the old St Trinian’s films, although he does vaguely recall the “frightening” women in them…

“I have almost no memory of the films themselves,” says the Mamma Mia actor. “I don’t think I’ve seen them since I was quite young. I remember being a bit frightened of the girls - I fancied them, even though I was young I found them attractive… and rather frightening! I’ve always been attracted to frightening girls, I’m married to one!”

Firth, who plays the Minister for Education in the new film, says this latest take on what was originally a hugely popular 1950s comic book series has a lot in common with the classic St Trinian’s movies.

“I saw bits of the old films after we did this. To be honest, I was surprised how much the old versions are like this. Obviously, some of the lingo had to be changed - no one was talking about ‘emos’ and ‘chavs’ and ‘posh tottie’ in the 1950s.”

Firth’s character doesn’t so much encounter any trouble from the girls – who in this film take on the education board when they discover their school may have to shut down due to a lack of finances – rather it’s a somewhat oversexed dog that causes him all manner of grief.

“It was a bit of a pain,” the actor says of the ‘dog makes love to villain’s leg’ scene. “There was a little ball of nylon, which they used as a substitute for the dog, because it wasn’t co-operative all the time, but there was a real dog. The only dog they could find in England that was prepared to shag me was a female called Dolly, but it turned out that she did not to want to do it when the time came. Dolly would intermittently be persuaded to play the game for two or three seconds, then they gave up so they stuck the nylon on me instead.”

What about Firth’s thoughts on the women of St Trinian’s? “They’re a bit naughty and very, very confident. They have a great sense of entitlement and are a little bit sexy – inclined to a drink and a cigarette. Oh, and they can be frightening, too!”
