In Untraceable, Diane Lane bucks the leading man trend by starring as an FBI agent chasing a serial killer who’s using the Internet to target his victims…
“A few years ago this kind of movie would have featured a Harrison Ford or Mel Gibson,” says director Gregory Hoblit, but he was glad to see a script that featured a woman this time around.
The filmmaker says: “I liked this because it was a lead female - so did Diane. She's so tired of playing the girlfriend or someone who gets saved. I'm hoping that it opens a door, because that will be good for Diane and other women.” Hoblit has been a fan of Lane since seeing her in George Roy Hill’s 1979 comedy A Little Romance. “She was all of 12 years old,” he remembers. “We’ve seen her grow up and do some really remarkable work. There is always something very grounded and very real and authentic about her. She’s a genuinely gifted actress and brings a lot of intelligence and integrity to what she’s doing.”
Hoblit, who also helmed the recent Anthony Hopkins/Ryan Gosling thriller Fracture, says he felt the acclaimed actress could “bring a level of verisimilitude” to the role of Jennifer Marsh.
Despite hardly being known as an action type, Lane jumped at the chance to star in what she calls a “smart” movie.
“I like smart movies where the woman is at the helm of figuring it out and not just a damsel in distress. I was also fascinated by the whole cybercrimes division of crime. I’m so naïve, you can’t imagine! I literally thought that computer viruses just spontaneously occurred, like viruses that we know in the world. It never occurred to me that people would maliciously invent harm and send it out into the universe like an arsonist or something. Do you have nothing better to do with your life? I’m so disappointed in human beings and myself for not knowing better.”
To convincingly play the part of an FBI agent who knows the ins and outs of the bureau’s cybercrimes division (‘cybercrime’ encompasses any criminal act dealing with computers and networks, like hacking), Lane spent time with a woman who does the job for a living.
