For those amongst you who haven’t heard of Dick Marcinko (or read his series of books), here’s a quick resume. Dick served two tours of Vietnam as a Spec Op where he won the Silver Star, four Bronze Stars and a Navy Commendation. After ‘Nam, Dick became a handpicked commander of the US Navy’s very first counterterrorism outfit, SEAL Team Six – which is where this game draws its inspiration from.
Featuring a premium blend of stealth and gung-ho third-person shooting, Rogue Warrior plays like an amalgamation of every awesome ’80s action movie you’ve ever watched. The cold war is still in full swing here, which means there are installations to be infiltrated, bad guys to be perforated, and huge explosions to casually walk away from without looking back (because that’s what real tough guys do, you see). Rogue Warrior also features a very effective cover system, and ‘Dick Marcinko-approved’ execution moves that use his patented brand of combat knives. We kid you not!
Developers Rebellion have rightly steered Rogue Warrior in the direction of a personality-driven shooter, with the decidedly potty-mouthed Marcinko being accurately portrayed by Mr Mickey Rourke. Honestly, we put this game in the same category as 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand – it’s a guilty pleasure that delivers at least three bangs for every buck you spend on it. Grab it, and go rogue!
