Batman: Arkham Asylum [ M ]

Release:  31/May/2009

Platform:  XBox360

Rating:  M

Genre:  Action Adventure

Batman: Arkham Asylum might be the best comic book video game ever made. Unrestricted by the deadline pressures and narrative of an accompanying film, it’s its own dark and brilliant beast.

It commences with Batman delivering a captured Joker to the Asylum for ‘treatment’ for his deranged mind. Unfortunately, this plays into the Joker’s hands, triggering a trap where the painted one takes over the entire asylum in a bid to destroy Batman.

Along with the crown prince of crime, other familiar enemies wait within the asylum’s walls, including Harley Quinn and Croc. Perhaps even more daunting is that, alongside these homicidal maniacs, prisoners from the brutal Blackgate prison are also on the loose within the asylum’s walls. They too have beef with Mr Wayne.

It’s a sterling setup thanks to the game’s dark claustrophobic design and moody tension, but thankfully the game packs plenty of substance as well. Far from being a one-dimensional ‘BAM!’ and ‘THWOK!’ beat ‘em up, Batman: Arkham Asylum incorporates a more holistic approach for players controlling the Dark Knight. Whilst third-person combat and attack combinations are present, they share game time with stealth and detective elements that lead to a far more satisfying experience. It’s possible, for instance, for Batman to sleuth through files and gather intel on enemies, use high-tech equipment to get through environments, and zip line around shadows to take out enemies one at a time.

Yep, this is the game for fans of one of the greatest comics icons.
#1 Whip It
Drew Barrymore's directorial debut is a classic coming-of-age story... on roller skates. No, it's not back to Xanadu, but into the high-impact world of girls' roller derby, where Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) finds herself transformed into Babe Ruthless.
